The likes of Liverpool and Chelsea once had futuristic stadium plans, while FC Barcelona wanted to build a new 150 000-seater arena, but none of them were ever built. Here are some futuristic stadiums, including a Siamese twins design and a volcano-like concept, that never came into being.

The Camp Nou is one of the most iconic stadiums in football, but at some point Barcelona considered moving into an even more impressive football temple.
One concept suggested was a stadium on the bay off the city, based on a major platform in the water and being connected with the mainland by a bridge. However, it never materialised and the club instead decided to upgrade the Camp Nou.

Another ambitious project saw a Merseyside consortium put forward a concept of "Siamese twins" stadiums for Liverpool and Everton in 2010. The two arenas would have been connected via a central spine, but the project never received enough backing to be turned into reality.
Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb, though, might have had the most outrageous idea of all as they mocked up plans to build a stadium that looked like a volcano. The "Blue Volcano" concept actually came tops in a design competition, and even received backing in a public referendum, but was eventually abandoned.
