Gallery: Futuristic 2022 Qatar WC Stadiums

With the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar just five years away, here are some designs for the futuristic stadiums that are planned for the tournament.

The Local Organising Committee of the 2022 showpiece has confirmed that eight to nine stadiums will be used, and construction has begun for most of the arenas, with the first having opened recently.

"We'll have eight or nine stadiums, not more than nine. All of them will be new, with the exception of the Khalifa, which has been renovated," Nasser Al Khater, assistant secretary general of the Qatari LOC, told Spanish publication AS.

"The opening match and the final will be in Lusail. And the legacy plans are already in place: some stadiums will be used by Qatar clubs, while others will be used for other purposes.

"What happened with some stadiums in South Africa and Brazil won't happen here."

The tournament will be hosted between 21 November and 18 December 2022, but many believe the heat at this time of the year will be a problem. However, Qatar are working on cooling systems inside the stadiums, as confirmed by the LOC.

"It was FIFA who decided the dates, not us. All the major leagues agreed with the change," Al Khater explained.

"The heat? In Brazil, it was nearly 40 degrees in Fortaleza. Qatar will have air conditioned stadiums, but in November and December that won't be necessary.

"Cooling technology is advancing in every sector, not just sport. The final of the Emir Cup was held in Doha a few months back and it was 41 degrees outside, and 19 degrees in the stadium."
