France Coach Explains Lacazette's Snub
France coach Didier Deschamps has explained why he chose Olivier Giroud over Alexandre Lacazette for the upcoming EURO 2020 qualifiers, despite the Arsenal star netting more goals this season.
Lacazette has enjoyed a fine season with the Gunners, registering 12 goals and nine assists in the Premier League compared to Giroud's one league goal and four assist.
Sevilla's Wissam Ben Yadder was also left out despite scoring 27 goals in all competitions, but Deschamps feels the two are too similar to Giroud.
"I don’t think they will be happy today,’ Deschamps was quoted as saying by Metro.
"They are doing a lot of very good things, but I have to make choices. ‘They are both closer in style to each other than Giroud. Giroud is less used in the Premier League, but what he does for us is [important].
"We are thinking. It is not only a question of age with them [Giroud and Blaise Matuidi], for them it is not a wildcard, they have experiences that enable them to be here. Now it is up to them to maintain themselves physically."
