The referee who took charge of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier between Brazil and Argentina has been suspended for missing Nicolas Otamendi’s 'violent' forearm smash on Selecao star.
The two South American rivals could not be separated on Tuesday after playing to a goalless draw, which saw Argentina book their spot at the World Cup.
There were a lot of heated moments in the encounter, most notably Otamendi's elbow to the face Leeds and Brazil star Raphinha.
While there was visible blood, the incident went unpunished while the Video Assistant Referee felt it should be nothing more than a yellow card defence.
Here are 11 stars who could miss out on the 2022 FIFA World Cup:
CONMEBOL released a statement revealing that referees Andrés Cunha and Esteban Ostojich have been suspended indefinitely.
” Conmebol considers that there was ‘violent conduct by player Nicolás Hernán Gonzalo Otamendi (ARG), against an opponent, putting his physical integrity at risk with the use of his arm over his face," the statement read, as per the Sun.
“In light of this, the Conmebol Referees Committee suspended referees Andrés Cunha and Esteban Ostojich indefinitely in the exercise of their functions in competitions organized by Conmebol. The referees have already been notified.”
