EURO 2020 Qualifier
Result: Portugal 1-1 Serbia
Date: 25 March 2019
Venue: Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica
Cristiano Ronaldo suffered an injury as European champions Portugal dropped points for the second successive EURO 2020 qualifier against Serbia.
Seven minutes into the encounter, the Serbs awarded a spot-kick when Rui Patrico brought down Mijat Gacinovic, which allowed Dusan Tadic to step up and slot home the opening goal.
Just as the visitors looked to settle in, the Selecao threatened an equaliser three minutes later, but Cristiano Ronaldo’s shot forced Marko Dmitrovic to a full stretched.
Selecao were dealt a big blow on 31 minutes when captain Ronaldo was forced to go off after picking up an apparent hamstring injury.
Despite Ronaldo's departure, Fernando Santos’s side drew level just before the break as Danilo Pereira’s thunderous strike flew past Dmitrovic into an unguarded net.
With no changes to the second half, the two nations revered for full-blown attacking football, as Patricio was forced to keep out Danko Lazovic and Adam Ljajic in the opening 10 minutes of the stanza.
The home side made their second change in Andre Silva for Dyego Sousa on 61 minutes, aiming to grab a hold of the encounter.
Silva nearly made the perfect impact with 20 minuets remaining, but his effort from close-range was blocked after getting on the end of Bernardo Silva’s.
In the end, the defending European champions struggled to break down the visitors late on as the spoils were shared on the night.
