Arsenal Clinch Emirates Cup Despite Loss To Sevilla
Emirates Cup Report: Arsenal v Sevilla 30 July 2017
Result: Arsenal 1-2 Sevilla
Date: 30 July 2017
Venue: Emirates Stadium
Arsenal won the Emirates Cup despite suffering a 2-1 defeat to Sevilla at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday evening.
Sevilla had the first real opening after 14 minutes when Ever Banega played Ben Yedder, who struck the upright with Petr Cech well beaten.
The Gunners should have taken the lead in the 22nd minute when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain lifted the ball Hector Bellerin at the far post, but the full-back blazed over from close range.
It was an evenly contested affair in the opening stanza, although both sides were let down by their decision-making in the final third.
That proved to be the trend for the rest of the half, as the score remained goalless as the sides entered the break.
Sevilla broke the deadlock shortly after the halftime break as Ben Yedder played in Joaquin Correa, who calmly slotted into the bottom corner.
The La Liga outfit then opted for a double change on 60 minutes as Clément Lenglet and Ganso were introduced, while Arsenal brought on Granit Xhaka.
Arsenal were level a minute later, as Danny Welbeck deflected Oxlade-Chamberlain's cross into the path of Lacazette, who slotted into an empty net.
However, Sevill restored their lead in the 69th courtesy of Steven Nzonzi's superb curling effort from 25-yards out.
Arsene Wenger responded by throwing on Theo Walcott for the final 15 minutes, as they pushed for an equaliser.
Nevertheless, the score remained 2-1 to the La Liga outfit, but the Gunners won the cup thanks to their superior goal difference.
