Maradona, who is currently the manager of Gimnasia de La Plata, held Napoli's all-time goalscoring record for 36 years after scoring 115 times for the Italian side, before seeing it being broken by former club captain Marek Hamsik in 2017.
The 1986 FIFA World Cup winner has now dropped down to third place on the club's all-time goalscorers list after Dries Mertens' display against Salzburg on Wednesday.
The Belgian forward netted a brace to lead his side to victory over their Austrian opponents and, in doing so, took his all-time tally for Napoli to 116, thus surpassing Maradona in the process.
The Belgium international is now just five goals shy of Hamsik's record of 121 goals for the club, which he is likely to break during the course of the current season.
The former PSV Eindhoven attacker joined Napoli in 2013, and was part of the squads that won the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana the following year.
