Dortmund were on their way to Signal Iduna Park for a UEFA Champions League encounter before the bus was struck by a bomb.
The defendant, who has only been identified as Sergej W due to Germany privacy rules, was convicted on 28 counts of attempted murder by a German court on Tuesday.
Former Dortmund defender Marca Bartra and a police officer were injured in the blast back in April.
According to the Guardian, the prosecutors alleged that the defendant took out a loan for a bet that the Bundesliga's values would drop, attacked the bus and tried to disguise it as if it was an Islamic terrorist act.
