In tragic news coming out of South America, the body of a missing footballer who had previously played in Spain has reportedly been found.
According to the Daily Star, Franco Acosta went missing on Saturday afternoon after he tried to cross a river in his native country Uruguay, with his brother making authorities aware soon afterwards that he had disappeared.
The 25-year-old's body has since been found, two days later.
It is claimed the ex-Villarreal player, who left Spain as a free agent in 2020, was found on Monday morning near where he was last seen in the Pando River in Montevideo.
Acosta joined Villarreal in 2015 from boyhood club Atletico Fenix, before going out on several loan spells to clubs in Spain and Uruguay.
The striker did not make a senior appearance for the Spanish club, but did represent its B team on 56 occasions.
The forward also played for his national team at U17 and U20 level, scoring 18 goals in 29 matches.
The Uruguayan FA released a statement following the sad news, saying: "We sincerely regret the death of the Uruguayan footballer Franco Acosta, who was a member of the national team's youth squads.
"Our condolences to his relatives, friends and teammates."
