On Monday evening, football's world governing body unveiled the players in contention for the prestigious individual accolade that was won in 2020 by Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski.

The Poland international is up for the award again due to his continued brilliance throughout this calendar year, and is joined by Real Madrid and France striker Karim Benzema, who has also enjoyed fine form in 2021.

Benzema, 33, has been among the most consistent performers on the globe over the past few seasons and was recalled to the Les Bleus set-up earlier this year ahead of the 2020 UEFA European Championship, during which he scored four goals.

While his return did not see Didier Deschamps' side go all the way in that tournament, the ex-Olympique Lyon forward did play a vital role in France's UEFA Nations League-winning campaign in October, in which he scored in both the semi-final and final.

Chelsea and Italy midfielder Jorginho was also named as one of the nominees for his exploits since January, with the pass-master celebrating tremendous success for both club and country in the form of the UEFA Champions League and the European Championship.

Jorginho's story is particularly inspiring due to him being only a rotational player before the arrival of Thomas Tuchel at the Blues in January. Since then, he has been at the heart of all things good for the Stamford Bridge-based side and the Azzurri.

Ronaldo Unhappy At Man Utd?

Lionel Messi is on the shortlist following his record-breaking form for Argentina at the Copa America in June and July, when he became the first player in international tournament history to win the prize, be awarded the best player title and finish as both the top scorer and top assist-provider.

Liverpool's in-form winger Mohamed Salah is the only African player among the candidates for the Best FIFA Men's Player prize, although Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy did make the shortlist for The Best FIFA Men's Goalkeeper trophy.

The winners of the awards will be named on 17 January in Zurich, Switzerland.
