Argentina Confirm Squad For Italy & Spain Friendlies, Big Stars Remain Out

Manager Jorge Sampaoli has confirmed his full Argentina squad for their high-profile friendlies with Italy and Spain, but some of their biggest names remained snubbed.

The former Chile boss, who won the Copa America with La Roja after beating Argentina in the 2015 final, announced the European contingent for his squad about two weeks ago.

He has now added five local players, namely defender Fabricio Bustos (Independiente), midfielders Pablo Perez (Boca Juniors) and Maximiliano Meza (Independiente), as well as forwards Cristian Pavon (Boca Juniors) and Lautaro Martinez (Racing Club) to his squad.

Argentina struggled during their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, only qualifying on the final matchday courtesy of a hat-trick by Lionel Messi, and also lost their latest friendly against Nigeria.

They will now test themselves against four-time World Cup winners Italy, who failed to qualify for the tournament in Russia, and 2010 World Cup winners Spain.

However, some of the Albiceleste's biggest names, including Juventus striker Paulo Dybala and Inter Milan forward Mauro Icardi, remained out of Sampaoli's selection, while Sergio Aguero stayed a part of the squad despite picking up an injury that kept him out of Manchester City's 2-0 win over Stoke City on Monday.

Goalkeepers: Sergio Romero (Manchester United), Nahuel Guzman (Tigres), Willy Caballero (Chelsea)

Defenders: Javier Mascherano (Hebei China Fortune), Nicolas Otamendi (Manchester City), Federico Fazio (Roma), Gabriel Mercado (Sevilla), Marcos Rojo (Manchester United), Ramiro Funes Mori (Everton), Marcos Acuna (Sporting CP), Nicolas Tagliafico (Ajax Amsterdam), Fabricio Bustos (Independiente)

Midfielders: Lucas Biglia (AC Milan), Ever Banega (Sevilla), Leandro Paredes (Zenit St Petersburg), Manuel Lanzini (West Ham United), Giovani Lo Celso (Paris Saint-Germain), Diego Perotti (Roma), Eduardo Salvio (Benfica), Pablo Perez (Boca Juniors), Maximiliano Meza (Independiente)

Forwards: Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Sergio Aguero (Manchester City), Gonzalo Higuain (Juventus), Angel Di Maria (Paris Saint-Germain). Cristian Pavon (Boca Juniors), Lautaro Martinez (Racing Club)

@Dlamini Wabantu question you gotta ask yourself is. Is Dyabala bigger than Messi and Di Maria before you tell me about this exam nonsense. Seemingly you dont know a big star then.

@Dlamini Wabantu as much as it was not an exam, how come Messi is in the squad. If you know soccer well Dyabala is not bigger than Messi. He is within Lamela ranking. You went for comprehension than the whole story yourself.

@Ntsimbi08 Hawu Ntsimbi08, if this was an exam you would have failed it. Above it was written in BOLD that some of the players highlighted as "the big stars" have been left out. When you read down the story, it is mentioned that Dybala is not part of the squad. So, you just went to read the list of selected players and started commenting. Read first my man.
