The reigning Premier League champions were recently banned from the UEFA Champions League for two seasons after failing to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations, and could face an even harsher sanction in the domestic league.
Should City be expelled from England's top flight, they would follow in the footsteps of a number of other clubs across Europe, including Serie A giants Juventus, who were stripped of their 2004/05 and 2005/06 titles, and relegated to Serie B after a match-fixing scandal.
The Bianconeri are one of three major Italian outfits that have been expelled from the top flight, with Palermo and Parma both being kicked out after going into financial administration, although the latter has since worked its way back to Serie A.
Scottish giants Rangers suffered a similar fate in 2012, when the club was liquidated and had to subsequently work its way back up to the Scottish Premiership after being placed in the nation's fourth division.
