8 People To Be Tried In Maradona 'Homicide'

Eight people are reportedly set to stand trial for their alleged involvement in the death of Argentina legend Diego Maradona, who is still widely considered one of the greatest footballers of all time.

According to Reuters, as cited by the Irish Independent, eight people who took care of the late 1986 FIFA World Cup winner in his final days will appear in court for homicide following his passing almost two years ago.

In November 2020, Maradona died due to cardiac arrest, but those tasked with looking after him were immediately suspected of mishandling the football icon.

The judge in charge of the case has questioned "the behaviours – active or by omission – of each of the accused which led to and contributed to the realisation of the harmful result".

The eight people, who include doctors, nurses and a psychologist, have been accused of "simple homicide", according to the ruling. The charge is believed to mean "taking a life with intent", as per the report.

Following Maradona's death, investigations into his personal doctor, Leopoldo Luque, were opened and others involved in treating the former Argentina No. 10 were also probed as a result.

Along with Luque as a defendant is psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, psychologist Carlos Diaz, nurses Gisella Madrid and Ricardo Almiron, their boss Mariano Perroni, and doctors Pedro Di Spagna and Nancy Forlini.

All of the accused have vehemently denied causing Maradona's death.
