Result: Belarus 1-3 Netherlands
Date: 07 October 2017
Venue: Borisov Area, Barysaw
The Netherlands kept their 2018 World Cup qualification hopes alive after defeating Belarus 3-1 on Saturday evening.
Belarus had a great opportunity to take the lead in the game after a counter attack saw them with a three on three situation in attack. They failed to make use of that opportunity and Netherlands escaped unscathed.
The visitors managed to find some sort of rhythm midway in the half when David Propper capitilised on an offensive opportunity to give his side a 1-0 after 25 minutes.
The scores remained unchanged at the half time break as the road to Russia got steeper for Dick Advocaat and his troops.
Maksim Volodko got the hosts off to a great start in the second half with a cracking low drive that gave Netherlands goalkeeper Jasper Cillesen no chance.
Arejen Robben converted a penalty in the 84th minute of the game to make it 2-1 while keeping his nations’ very slim hopes of qualifying for Russia alive.
Memphis Depay scored his team’s third goal on the night to cap off a satisfactory attacking display for the Dutch.
The Netherlands managed to hold on to their 3-1 lead and sealed a vital win, but are now faced with a mammoth task of having to beat Sweden by six clear goals to have any chance of qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup as runners up of group A.
