Wasteful France Fail To Beat Belarus
2018 World Cup Qualifier
Result: Belarus 0-0 France
Date: 6 September 2016
Venue: Borisov Arena
Despite a number of chances, France were held to a goalless draw by Belarus in their 2018 World Cup qualifier on Tuesday night.
The hosts were inches away from opening the scoring in the 23rd minute when a terrific cross from the right found Nikolay Signevich, but he failed to make proper contact with the ball.
After a poor start, France picked it up towards the end of the first half as Antoine Griezmann and Anthony Martial linked up to give Olivier Giroud a chance to head home, but an important block deflected the effort wide.
Les Bleus showed intent again after the interval, going close to netting the opener. Griezmann inspired the move which set up Giroud once more, but the Arsenal man's strike glanced just wide of the post.
The visitors had one of their best chances just shy of the hour mark as Griezmann smashed a free kick on target, but Andrey Gorbunov did well to get across and parry it away.
Moments later France were knocking on the door again as Giroud rose high to direct a corner kick goalwards with his head, but the goalkeeper was up to the task once more.
In the 74th minute France were still looking for their first goal. The chance fell for Paul Pogba at the far post, but he didn't look switched on and scooped the shot wide of the target from close range.
France had another late chance to score a winner but Griezmann put his pass behind Kevin Gameiro, who was open in the centre, and they had to accept a goalless draw.
