The South American giants are the most successful nation in football history, having lifted the FIFA World Cup five times, in addition to eight Copa Americas.

However, the Selecao could perhaps have won even more trophies if several top footballers had not opted against playing for them.

The latest player to decide to represent another country instead of that of his birth is Rafael Toloi, who was called up by Italy for the current international break.

The Atalanta defender was born in Brazil and featured for the country's U20 side, but will now don the Azzurri shirt after acquiring Italian citizenship in February and being given the green light by FIFA.

"When I heard that Italy wanted to call me, I immediately said 'yes' and my whole family was happy," Toloi said, as quoted by Football Italia.

"It's a huge emotion, it's the result of everyday work and commitment. I hope to make it as good as possible, it's really a dream.

"My ancestors are from Trentino, my Italian nationality is not new, I had it even before arriving, but in the last two months I had the OK from FIFA to play with the Azzurri."

Toloi is not the only Brazil-born footballer who will represent another nation. One of the most famous names that comes to mind in this regard is Portugal centre-back Pepe.

The 38-year-old, whose full name is Kepler Laveran de Lima Ferreira, was born and raised in Brazil but obtained Portuguese citizenship in 2007. He never represented the country of his birth at any level, but the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia was his sixth major international tournament with Portugal, whom he has represented 117 times so far.
