As is the case come the end of every season, it is the time when we find out which footballers will not be returning to the playing fields ahead of the next campaign.
Legendary Bundesliga striker Mario Gomez has finally called quits on his career after 15 years at the highest level. The German represented Stuttgart, Bayern Munich, Fiorentina, Besiktas and Wolfsburg in his career, with his best goal return being 113 strikes in 174 matches for the Bavarians. Gomez was also capped 78 times for his country, scoring 31 goals along the way.
Iconic Serie A figure Goran Pandev, who won the UEFA Champions League with Inter Milan in 2010, is close to playing his last match as a professional footballer, while Everton club captain Leighton Baines has announced his retirement from the beautiful game.
After coming through the ranks at Wigan Athletic, the 35-year-old eventually made his dream move to his beloved Everton, whom he represented on 420 occasions, scoring 39 goals and assisting a further 67 strikes from left-back.
In addition to his more than respectable club career, Baines also played for England on 30 occasions, including twice at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. A winner of that tournament, Andre Schurrle, who provided the assist for the extra-time goal in Germany's 1-0 win over Argentina in the final, has also decided to quit football, doing so at the age of just 29.
