Despite playing an important role in Chelsea's UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League triumphs between 2011 and 2014, Fernando Torres ultimately failed to live up to expectations at Stamford Bridge after his £50 million (R948 million) move from Liverpool. The former Spain international was a shadow of the player who was once regarded as the world's best striker by many, and managed 45 goals in 172 appearances before moving on to AC Milan and then boyhood club Atletico Madrid.
After losing Torres, Liverpool sought out England international Andy Carroll in a deal that proved to be even more calamitous than Chelsea's blunder. The Reds paid a then club-record fee of £35 million (R663 million) to sign Carroll from Newcastle United, but injury and poor form saw him score just 11 goals in 58 appearances before being sold at a loss to West Ham United.
Premier League giants Manchester United also made one of the worst January signings when they snatched Chile star Alexis Sanchez from rivals Arsenal. The deal was heralded as a stroke of genius at the time, but proved to be disastrous for the Red Devils after Sanchez managed just five goals in 45 appearances. The former FC Barcelona star has since been loaned out to Inter Milan, although United still pay a portion of his reported £25 million-a-year contract.
Barcelona seemingly made a blunder of their own in 2018 when they splashed a mammoth fee of £105 million (R1.9 billion) rising to £142 million (R2.6 billion) to sign Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool. The Brazil midfielder recorded a decent enough return at the Camp Nou, but failed to live up to his price tag and has since been loaned out to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
Other deals, such as Gonzalo Higuain's move to Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain's acquisition of Yohan Cabaye and Nicolas Anelka's arrival at Juventus all rank among January's worst signings, and you can see the full list by scrolling through the gallery above!
