Here is a look at 12 high-profile footballers of the past and present who landed up broke following a few seemingly poor career decisions, including a striker who was once reportedly the best-paid African player in the world.
In 2015, after he signed for Shanghai SIPG in China, it was reported that former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan was the best-paid African footballer on the globe.
At the time, the then-29-year-old had committed to a two-year deal in the Chinese Super League that saw him reportedly earn about £227 000 (R4.5 million) every week.
Astonishingly, however, Gyan claimed to have just £600 (R12 122) in his bank account in 2018.
The veteran forward is among a long list of players who have made some poor financial decisions, including former England and Liverpool goalkeeper David James, who reportedly declared himself bankrupt seven years ago.
Following an investigation into his accounts in 2020, Brazil icon Ronaldinho was reported to have just £5 (R101) to his name despite once being one of the best players in world football.
