Petersen recently completed a BSc degree in Engineering at Wits University, as his club announced last weekend.
However, the 25-year-old is not the only player who has managed to achieve a degree while still playing football.
Salomon Kalou is among the latest stars who have celebrated academic triumphs. The 35-year-old, who now plays for Botafogo in Brazil, took to social media to share images of his graduation from the Lyon Business School in France in September last year.
Having acquired a Business Administration degree, it remains to be seen how he will use it once he hangs up his boots.
Current The Best FIFA Men's Player Robert Lewandowski also holds a degree. The Bayern Munich forward completed his studies in Physical Education with coaching and management in 2017.
He was given the highest possible grade by the panel at Warsaw's School of Education in Sport for his thesis RL 9, path to glory.
Romelu Lukaku is another forward with a university degree. The former Manchester United striker, who now plays for Inter Milan, is a natural linguist who speaks as many as five languages, namely: English, Spanish, Dutch, French and Portuguese.
On top of that, he is also said to understand German and Swahili, and holds a degree in Tourism and Public Relations.
