The former Kaizer Chiefs player, who is currently on the lookout for a new club, recently addressed issues around the wealth of football players, warning his peers of retiring poor.

"Some of us had to start taking care of our families before we could take care of ourselves," he said during a press conference with the South African Football Journalists' Association.

"It's always been like that. By the time you take care of yourself, it's too late. But we must change the narrative as well and not focus on the cars and the nice life – only to retire poor. It's a worry."

On the international scene, a few players have failed to manage their wealth well enough and ended up going broke.

Ronaldinho is believed to be one those footballers, with the FC Barcelona legend reported to have just £5 (R106) in his bank account in April. According to The Sun, he owes debts of up to £1.75 million (R37 million) after being heavily fined for illegal construction in his home country, which saw his Brazilian passport being seized by the authorities.

Meanwhile, Asamoah Gyan, who was Africa's highest-paid footballer when he moved to Shanghai SIPG in 2015, told a court he was broke during a divorce case in 2018, saying he cannot even pay for business class tickets of his children. However, despite his public declaration two years ago, the Ghana legend seems to have recovered and is said to have several businesses that are flourishing.
