StadiumDB.com, a website dedicated to the latest stadiums all over the world, pre-selected 27 newly-built or renovated stadiums with the help of three-man jury.
The jury consisted of three renowned architects with a speciality in stadium design, and they selected the 10 finalists based on three main criteria, namely: architectural value, functionality, and innovation. These 10 stadiums underwent a more detailed assessment before the winner was announced.
The 10 finalists represent five countries, with Russia dominating the list with four World Cup stadiums, followed by two from China and Hungary, while Australia and Turkey have one finalist each.
The Mordovia Arena in Saransk, Russia is among the final 10 nominees. Effectively the stadium was redesigned several times with work already ongoing and ended up with a different look from the early design as an "opaque white stadium with vast glazing and a dynamic, floating outer form".
After the economic collapse in 2015, costs needed to be cut and the stadium ended up being a lot cheaper than initially planned. It now has the solar symbolism with an intensive mosaic-like orange-to-red facade, which is similar to the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. However, the designers insisted that the similarities are purely coincidence. During the World Cup it seated over 44 000 spectators, but temporary sections have since been dismantled and it now has an average capacity of 15 000.
Three other World Cup stadiums were also included among the 10 finalists, and you can find images of all 10 nominees in the gallery above.
