10 Clubs That Are Secretly Broke

Although some of these sides are still paying huge salaries to their players, here are 10 football clubs that are believed to be secretly broke.

Click through the gallery above to see 10 clubs that are reportedly broke, according to Football Daily.

It is almost impossible to imagine a top-level football franchise not running at a profit, but for many clubs across the world, this is an unfortunate reality.

In 2019, Italian giants AC Milan were believed to be in debt of about €272 million (R5.2 billion) after years of poor decisions in the boardroom. The Rossoneri have also been without UEFA Champions League football since 2014, which has contributed hugely to the club's economic issues.

To add to Milan's woes, a large sum of money will need to be spent on their new stadium, which will replace the San Siro, a ground they share with city rivals Inter Milan. This investment is set to leave the Rossoneri in further financial trouble, so it could be a while before they are back at the top of Italian football.

Football Daily claimed that Roman Abramovich's Chelsea are also among those clubs struggling economically, with the Blues' business model believed to be unsustainable without Champions League football. While the London-based side is not in immediate danger of financial collapse, there would have been a big sigh of relief following their fourth-placed finish in the Premier League this season.

Staying in England, Arsenal are also said to be in big economic trouble after the club posted losses in the 2018/19 campaign for the first time since 2002, which was only six years into Arsene Wenger's time in charge. Furthermore, the Gunners have made little money on player sales in recent years.

Spanish side Atletico Madrid are reportedly in debt to the tune of about €506 million (R9.78 billion), while struggling French giants Monaco are claimed to be running at a loss of near €147 million (R2.8 billion), despite the club making huge profits on player sales in recent seasons.

10 Footballers Who Were Rich Before Football

With all the bad news coming out of FC Barcelona, it is perhaps no surprise to see the Catalan giants on the list with their estimated debt since 2019 reportedly around €504 million (R9.74 billion) – click through the gallery above to see more clubs that are believed to be secretly poor!
