Costa Rica Shock Uruguay

Costa Rica produced a wonderful second-half performance to claim a come from behind 3-1 win over Uruguay in their Group D clash at the Estádio Castelão, Fortaleza on Saturday.

Uruguay thought they had taken the lead when Godin got on the end of a free-kick before poking the ball home at the far-post, but the linesman raised his flag for offside with 15 minutes on the clock.

Striker Edinson Cavani came close a minute later but the PSG player lashed his effort wide from the edge of the box.

Oscar Tabarez’s men did finally break the deadlock as Diego Forlan whipped in a dangerous cross into the box, with Costa Rica’s Diaz tangling with Lugano and bringing the Uruguay defender down.

The referee wasted no time in awarding the penalty and Cavani stepped up to confidently slot past Navas and give Uruguay a 1-0 lead with 24 minutes on the clock.

Costa Rica striker Campbell then fired a warning shot at their opponents as he struck a fierce 30 yard effort which went just wide of the top corner, but it did have Muslera worried.

Gonzalez was inches away from equalising but he just missed a loose ball at the back post after a corner which evaded everyone in the penalty area in the 43rd minute.

Forlan almost doubled Uruguay’s advantage in the final minute of the first-half with a wicked deflected shot which looked destined for the top corner only for Navas to pull off an acrobatic save and keep his side just one goal behind.

Costa Rica came out stronger of the two in the second-half and almost levelled matters when their skipper Ruiz whipped in a cross which Duarte headed straight at Muslera, before firing the rebound wide of the target in the 50th minute.

They did finally find the equaliser when Campbell produced a wonderful finish, smashing the ball into the corner to make it 1-1 in the 54th minute.

They were not done just yet and Duarte made up for his earlier miss when he popped up at the back-post to head home following another free-kick, 2-1 to Costa Rica.

Substitute Urena then sealed the victory for Costa Rica, making it 3-1 with a smart finish from close-range in the 84th minute, and earn them a first win at the World Cup proper in 12 years with Maxi Pereira being sent-off in stoppage time to make things worse for Uruguay.
