Chile Send Spain Packing

2104 FIFA World Cup

Group B

Half Time: Spain 0-2 Chile

Date: 18 June 2014

Venue:Maracana - Estadio Jornalista Mário Filho

First half goals from Eduardo Vargas and Charles Aranguiz saw Chile beat Spain 2-0 in their Group B, 2014 FIFA World Cup match at the Maracana on Wednesday.

The result sees the 2010 World Champions exit the tournament after two losses in two games while Chile and the Netherlands will progress into the knockout stages of this year’s tournament.

Spain controlled the possession stakes early on, but only managed to create their first chance on goal in the 15th minute when Diego Costa worked his way into the box, but he dragged his 14-yard effort wide of the target.

Moments later a goalmouth scramble ensued inside the Chile box where Xabi Alonso managed to poke the ball goalwards, but Claudio Bravo made a good close-range stop.

Chile then took the lead in the 20th minute after spending the majority of the match on the back-foot when a quick counter-attack concluded with Eduardo Vargas toe-poking the ball home from six-yards, 1-0.

Costa nearly equalised for Spain eight minutes later when he met a low cross from the left, but his shot form an acute angle eight-yards out struck the side-netting.

Then, a minute before the break, Spain’s task was made all that more difficult when they conceded their second goal of the match.

The goal came about when Spanish keeper Iker Casillas punched a 30-yard free-kick shot from Alexis Sanchez into the path of Charles Aranguiz and he made not mistake with a clinical finish from 14-yards, 2-0.

The second half saw Spain come out attacking, but they couldn’t buy a goal as they continued to waste their possession.

Sergio Busquets should really have pulled one back for Spain in the 54th minute when he met a cross from the right, but from only a couple of yards out, and completely unmarked, he side-footed the ball wide.

Mauricio Isla should have put the result beyond doubt in the 67th minute when he met a low driven cross at the back post, but sliding to the ball he knocked it over from a couple of yards out.

Spain threw numbers forward in the final 20 minutes of the match, but could not find a break through.

The result sees the defending World Champions out of the World Cup while Chile and Netherlands will progress from Group B into the Last 16 is confirmed.
