2014 FIFA World Cup
Full Time: Germany 4-0 Portugal
Date: 16 June 2014
Venue: Arena Fonte Nova
A hat-trick from Thomas Muller in his 50th appearance for Germany saw them to a convincing 4-0 win over a ten-man Portugal in their opening Group G, 2014 FIFA World Cup match at the Arena Fonte Nova on Monday.
It was a positive start to the match by Portugal who had the first shot on goal in the fifth minute when Cristiano Ronaldo broke behind the defence and played the ball to Hugo Almeida, but his shot from the edge of the box was straight at the keeper.
Three minutes later Germany should have opened the scoring when a poor clearance from Portuguese goalkeeper Rui Patricio saw the ball fall to Sami Khedira 24-yards out, but he shot wide with an empty goal at his mercy.
Germany were then afforded the perfect opportunity to take the lead in the tenth minute when Mario Goetze was pulled down inside the box by Joao Pereira.
Muller stepped up and made no mistake from the spot, 1-0.
Nani came close to the equaliser in the 25th minute when he let fly with the outside of his boot from 20-yards, but his shot skimmed the top of the crossbar.
Portugal then suffered a bit of a set-back three minutes later when Hugo Almeida had to leave the field injured and was replaced by Eder.
Germany then doubled their lead in the 32nd minute when Mat Hummels powerfully headed home a corner-kick from ten-yards out, 2-0.
Things went from bad to worse for Portugal who were reduced to ten men five minutes later when Pepe was shown a straight red card for a head-butt on Muller.
Muller virtually wrapped up proceedings with his side’s third goal in first half injury time after a clinical finish into the bottom corner from 14-yards out, 3-0.
The second half saw Portugal understandably chasing the game which left them exposed at the back and Mesut Ozil should have scored Germany’s fourth goal in the 51st minute when he broke through on goal, but was denied in a one-on-one situation with the keeper.
In the 69th minute Andre Schurrle broke for Germany and played a superb pass to Goetze who only had the keeper to beat, but shot over from 16-yards out.
Muller grabbed his hat-trick ten minutes later after toe-poking the ball home when the Portuguese keeper spilled a low Andre Schuller cross into his path a couple of yards out, 4-0.
