2014 FIFA World Cup
Half Time: Uruguay 1-0 England
Date: 19 June 2014
Venue: Arena Corinthians
A single goal from Luis Suarez gave Uruguay a 1-0 lead over England at half time in their Group D, 2014 FIFA World Cup match at the Arena Corinthians on Thursday.
The opening 45 minutes of the game had a lively pace to it with the play flowing from end to end.
Neither side allowed the other any time on the ball with a lot of the play congested in the middle of the park.
The majority of chances on goal were long range efforts as both teams’ defences were resolute in their duties to protect the goal.
As the half progressed Uruguay started to take the ascendancy, but it was at the other end where we came closest to the opening goal when Wayne Rooney hit the crossbar with a header on the half hour mark.
Some sloppy defending by England then cost them five minutes before the break when a loss of possession on the half way line saw Uruguay break out and score the game’s first goal courtesy of a Luis Suarez header.
Statistically, England had more possession, but shots on goal were even with five apiece.
As it stands the loss could see England out of the World Cup, so you can bank on them throwing players forward in attack in the second 45.
