2104 FIFA World Cup
Group B
Half Time: Spain 0-2 Chile
Date: 18 June 2014
Venue:Maracana - Estadio Jornalista Mário Filho
Goals from Eduardo Vargas and Charles Aranguiz gave Chile a commanding 2-0 lead over Spain going into the half time break of their Group B, 2014 FIFA World Cup match at the Maracana on Wednesday.
The opening 45 minutes saw Spain with more of the ball as they tried to pass their way through the Chile defence, but the South American side held firm and opted to hit on the counter-attack.
A tactic that paid off for Chile when they took the lead in the 20th minute after Eduardo Vargas concluded a swift break-out by toe-poking the ball home from six-yards.
Still, despite going behind, Spain continued to push forward, but their final pass or cross continuously let them down and struggled to create any clear-cut chances in front of goal.
Instead, a minute before the break Charles Aranguiz doubled his side’s lead to give Chile a 2-0 lead going into half time.
Statistically, Spain saw more of the ball and had more shots on goal with five attempts to Chile’s four.
If Spain hope to progress into the knockout stages of the World Cup they will have to produce something special in the second half to inspire a comeback.
As it stands Spain will exit the World Cup while Chile and Netherlands progress from Group B into the Last 16 will be confirmed.
