Scolari Closing In On Parreira Record

Brazil coach, Luiz Felipe Scolari, could equal Carlos Alberto Parreira’s winning record with the Selecao, if his side beats Mexico tonight.

Currently, the former Bafana Bafana head coach, who now works as Brazil’s technical co-ordinator, has recorded nine victories during World Cup finals - one more than Scolari.

But should the five-time champions overpower their Group A opponents at the Estadio Castelão in Forteleza then the pair will be all square as far as statistics are concerned.

Scolari has confirmed that Zenit forward Hulk will miss tonight’s game with a hamstring problem and has warned his players of a difficult opponent.

"Every time we play against Mexico we have difficulties," he said in his pre-match press conference.

"That is why it is a game the players know will be very even, they need to have very good conditioning from the beginning until the end.

"The two teams play football of very good quality, with the ball on the ground, lots of moving around.

"But we know a victory will put us in a highly comfortable position for the next round, so we'll play with that in mind."

Interestingly, both Scolari and Parreira have triumphantly led Brazil to Fifa World Cup honours, Parreira in 1994 and Scolari eight years later when the South American won their last trophy.

The man with the most victories to his name is Mario Zagallo with a record 13, having been in charge during the 1970, 1974, 1998 World Cups and winning the trophy in 1970.

However, Scolari has six more games to break Zagallo’s record. If he would win all remaining games, he would not only lift this year’s World Cup trophy, the 65-year-old could also become Brazil’s greatest coach in history.
