German hat-trick hero, Thomas Muller, said that the difference between Germany and Portugal in their opening Group G, 2014 FIFA World Cup encounter was that his side took their chances in front of goal.
Muller became the first player in this year’s World Cup to score three goals as his side ran out comfortable 4-0 winners over a ten-man Portugal side on Monday.
The other goal for the Germans was scored by Mats Hummels when he headed home a corner-kick to make it 2-0.
Muller was named the ‘Man of the Match’ for his efforts in front of goal. He was also instrumental in the 37th minute sending off of Pepe who head-butted the German striker in retaliation for play-acting.
Speaking after the match Muller said that his side took their chances in front of goal and that coupled with the Portuguese side tiring saw them to victory.
“We started the game well and everything went brilliantly for us,” said Muller.
“We had chances at the start and the second goal came from a dead-ball situation and gave us a pretty big cushion.
“We made the most of our chances and though the second goal didn’t exactly kill the game, we knew it would be difficult for them to come back, even more so with just ten men.”
