The Best No. 3s In World Cup History

There are officially just three days to go until the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, and as part of our countdown, we have looked at some of the most iconic No. 3s in the tournament's incredible history, including an African legend!

Tired of reading? Click through the gallery above to see some of the best No. 3s to have played in the showpiece.

The No. 3 jersey is usually seen as one of the famous shirts when it comes to defenders, and we have picked four legends and one striker too.

Ghana international Asamoah Gyan was one of the stars of the 2010 World Cup that was held in South Africa. During that tournament, the 32-year-old striker inspired his nation to become only the third African team in history to qualify for the quarter-finals of the tournament, where they were knocked out by Uruguay.

Heading into defenders who wore the famous number at the showpiece, former Brazil captain Lucio simply cannot be ignored. The centre-back, who was capped 105 times, helped the Selecao lift the World Cup in 2002, a tournament that was hosted by South Korea and Japan.

Italy legend Paolo Maldini never won the prestigious trophy with his country, but still will go down as one of the greats of the game. The defender ended up in third place back in 1990, and four years later, could only manage a runners-up spot as the Azzurri lost to Brazil in the final in the US.

Two other defenders who make our list are Bixente Lizarazu from France and Netherlands legend Frank Rijkaard. The Frenchman was part of his country's 1998 World Cup-winning campaign, while Rijkaard was unable to win the coveted trophy with the Oranje, and will always be remembered for the infamous spitting incident between hiimself and Germany's Rudi Voller in the 1990 edition.

Who do you think was the greatest player to have worn the No. 3 shirt at the World Cup? Let us know in the comments section below.
