Four years ago, Brazil were embarrassingly defeated 7-1 by Germany in the FIFA World Cup semi-final, a result that sent shockwaves through football.
Neymar missed that clash with the Germans due to an injury he picked up against Colombia in the quarter-finals, but this time out, the Paris Saint-Germain man will be looking to inspire his country to glory.
Not only will Neymar be Brazil’s leader on the field, but it is also off the field where he stands above the rest. The PSG star is believed to earn £440 000 (R7.3 million) a week in France, making him one of the highest-paid stars at the World Cup.
Barca’s Philippe Coutinho reportedly earns a weekly wage of £240 000 (R4 million) at the Spanish giants, while Marcelo, who recently won his third consecutive UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid, is on £200 000 (R3.3 million) a week.
PSG centre-back duo Thiago Silva and Marquinhos are both said to be on £176 000 (R2.9 million) a week in France, while City midfielder reportedly earns £150 000 (R2.5 million) every week at the Premier League champions.
Chelsea’s Willian and Barca’s Paulinho earn £120 000 (R2 million) a week at their respective sides, while ninth on the list is Roberto Firmino is on £100 000 (R1.6 million) a week at Liverpool.
The last player to feature in the list is City striker Gabriel Jesus, who according to reports earns £90 000 (R1.5 million) a week in England.
