Two-time champions Uruguay will play Didier Deschamps’ France in their 2018 FIFA World Cup quarter final on Friday afternoon. Here is how the two teams will line up!
FIFA World Cup, quarter final
Teams: Uruguay vs France
Date: 6 July 2018
Venue: Nizhny Novgorod Stadium
Les Bleus will be without the experienced Blaise Matuidi on Friday afternoon due to suspension, while there have been concerns over Edinson Cavani’s fitness for Uruguay.
A worry for France will be that Olivier Giroud, Corentin Tolisso, Paul Pogba and Benjamin Pavard are just one yellow card away from suspension, while the same goes for Uruguay’s Rodrigo Bentancur, who has been a pivotal figure for the South Americans.
Uruguay, who impressively beat Portugal in their round of 16 tie, have kept six clean sheets against France in their last six meetings, while they have also won all their four games at this year's World Cup, conceding the joint-least goals.
Deschamps’ men have been victorious in three of their four games at the tournament, but having won by just a one-goal margin in all of those.
Uruguay will be fully aware of the threat that Kylian Mbappe poses after his brace against Argentina in the previous round, while the French defence will be familiar with the danger that Luis Suarez can cause them.
The FC Barcelona man has struck twice so far in Russia, while his long-time national teammate Cavani has found the back of the net on three occasions. The winner of this match will meet the winner of Brazil vs Belgium.
Here is how the teams will start the match:
Uruguay: Muslera, Caceres, Gimenez, Godin, Laxalt, Nandez, Torreira, Vecino, Bentancur, Suarez, Stuani
France: Lloris, Pavard, Varane, Umtiti, Hernandez, Kante, Pogba, Mbappe, Griezmann, Tolisso, Giroud.
