Official: Spain Sack Manager Day Before 2018 FIFA World Cup

By Kurt Buckerfield - Jun 13, 2018 12:12 PM @KurtLaduma

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has sacked Julen Lopetegui just one day before the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia starts, following his agreement to take charge of Real Madrid from next month.

Messi Names Eight Stars To Watch At The World Cup, Snubs Ronaldo

On Tuesday, it was announced that Lopetegui would be stepping into Los Blancos' hot seat ahead of the 2018/19 season, following Zinedine Zidane's exit from the Santiago Bernabeu.

After murmurs that Spanish football authorities were unhappy with the timing of the announcement, Lopetegui has now officially been sacked as manager of the national team with immediate effect.

"The Spanish national team is the team of all the Spaniards," Luis Rubiales, the RFEF president, said, according to ESPN correspondent Dermot Corrigan

"We only found out just five minutes before that he was leaving for Madrid.

"There is a way that you must act. Julen has worked in a great way with the team, but we cannot accept how he has acted in this case."

Spain take on Portugal in their first match of the World Cup on Friday evening, for which they will now be without Lopetegui.

Madrid should have waited. Spain should have also been lenient. Their anger driven decision may cost the team at the tournament

@lulikho if Real Madrid announced his appointment without consulting Julen then its a different story, but this type of decision is usually made by both parties (Julen and Real). Whats also difficult to swallow for the FA is finding out in the 11th hour that the national team coach has already signed a deal with another team.

@lulikho truth is, we dont know whether the coach was involved in the decision to announce his appointment before the World Cup but i would imagine he was, hence the emidiate sacking. Big decisions need to made Pal, the FA was disrespected and let down by both Real and Julen. You reckon they should have kept him anyway?

@Thobz10 the point I'm making is the same one made by the spokesperson about them being all Spanish. Another point to remember is that SL wrote that the decision to make the announcement public was only taken when another member of the Spain squad (besides the Madrid players) got to know of the appointment. In other words Real Madrid was not yet prepared to make the announcement. If as the spokesperson says they are all Spanish how do they come to the conclusion that because a professional coach has taken a job at Madrid he is going to be biased against, say, the Barcelona players? The previous coach did coach Barcelona before. Was he unprofessionally biased against Real Madrid players? Why then was he not fired? Or were they not all Spanish at the time?

@Thobz10 But how does sacking a coach 1 day before the World's biggest tournament makes the Spain FA proffessionally? The only people who are wrong here are Madrid & Spain FA. Madrid are the ones that announced the Coach's appointment in public not the coach...& Spanish FA are the ones that fired the coach a day before the World Cup.. .The coach did nothing wrong.

So the announce of Coach joining Madrid was going to hurt more than Spain FA replacing the coach in 1 day before the world cup?!

South Africans are so used to this destructive politics in our country that we politicise everything. Yes the country of spain is currently devided but this decision really doesnt seem political to me. It was simply unproffesional from Julen and Real Madrid to make that announcement before the world cup, especially without informing the FA.

This coach is one of the most unprofessional coaches I've ever known. He full understanding the kind of tension between Barcelona and Madrid players, how does he expact the Barcelona players to be happy while they know they are managed by a Madrid coach. Real Madrid is also not innocent in this case.
