The Croatians, who have now reached their first ever final in the tournament, had to work hard for the win, having had to come from 1-0 down after Kieran Trippier found the back on the net in the opening minutes of the first half.
As the match progressed, goals from Ivan Perisic and Mario Mandzukic got the Mediterranean nation over the line, and Modric took the opportunity after that match to have his say about the English media.
"English journalists, pundits from television, they underestimated Croatia tonight, and that was a huge mistake," a passionate Modric told ITV Sport.
"All these words from them we take, we were reading, and we were saying 'OK, today we will see who will be tired.'
"And like I said, they should be more humble and respect more opponents. However, we showed again that we are not tired, we dominated the game physically, mentally, in all aspects.
"We should kill the game even before extra time, and this is an amazing achievement for us. It's a dream come true for us after such a long time.
"We are in the final, it's the biggest success in Croatian history in sport, and we have to be proud."
Croatia will play against France in the 2018 FIFA World Cup final at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on Sunday.
