The Manchester United defender started his second game for Argentina at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and scored the winning goal in the 86th minute.

Rojo’s strike sent the two-time world champions through to the last 16, where they will meet France on Saturday, while Nigeria were sent home.

At half-time images made the rounds on social media, portraying Messi chatting to his teammates in the tunnel and Rojo now revealed how the captain motivated his the rest of his team.

"Messi came up to us and told us to calm down and not be stressed,” he said as reported by TyC Sports.

"We felt nervous and that message helped us a lot and gave me personally a huge confidence-boost.

"Messi is our captain and he's the best captain in the world, it was amazing to score that goal."

Rojo added that Messi encouraged his teammates to take shots in the second interval and this instruction luckily worked out perfectly for him.

"During halftime, Messi said that all of us have the duty to score so whenever we get the chance, we shoot, no matter our position," he added.

"So, when I saw that ball coming towards me, I kicked it in with all that I had in me and (laughs) it went in."

@Mashia1950 because the ball hit the head first then the hand and furthermore the handball didn't interfere with the round of play as the ball fell into a Nigerian striker's feet who decided to sky the ball.

Contrary to what some idiots might think, the best leader is not necessarily the one who shouts or talks the loudest, but it's the one who inspires, sometimes by words, but mostly by example. The GOAT doesn't have to scream to put his message effectively across...
