Casillas Picks His 2018 World Cup XI, Snubs Neymar

Former Real Madrid and Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas has named his star-studded ultimate dream team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, but snubbed Brazil superstar Neymar for it.

The 37-year-old, who is on the books of FC Porto, has still not officially retired from Spain duty. He was his country's first-choice goalkeeper at the past four World Cups – in 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014 – but has since been replaced by David de Gea as La Furia Roja's No. 1.

As a consequence, it might not surprise many that he did not pick the Manchester United shot-stopper as the goalkeeper in his 2018 World Cup dream team, and instead opted for Belgium's Thibaut Courtois.

Overall, Casillas named just two of his countrymen – Dani Carvajal and Sergio Ramos – but six of his former Los Blancos teammates were selected. Brazil's Marcelo was his favoured left-back, while Germany's Toni Kroos and Croatia's Luka Modric were selected in midfield, and Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo leads the line of his dream team.

The other players in his 2018 World Cup XI are Brazil centre-back Thiago Silva, Belgium's Eden Hazard in an advanced midfield role and France's Antoine Griezmann, as well as Argentina's Lionel Messi on the wing.

With so much attacking threat, there was seemingly no space for Brazil's Neymar, who played his first game in three months in the Selecao's 2-0 win over Croatia on Sunday, during which he found the back of the net with a super solo goal.

Note: Casillas' dream team was published by fantasy sports portal RealFevr, as cited by Globo Esporte.
