Frustrated Germany Star Slams Team Tactics After Mexico Loss

Frustrated Germany Star Slams Team Tactics After Mexico Loss

A frustrated Mats Hummels has criticised Germany's tactical approach after their shock 1-0 loss to Mexico in their Group F match on Sunday.

The current world champions struggled to break down a stubborn Mexican side that struck the only goal of the match in the first half, courtesy of Hirving Lozano.

The Germans, who managed 26 shots at goal during the game, did not give goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa too many problems, and Hummels feels that his team did not learn from their mistakes in their warm-up match against Saudi Arabia before the tournament started.

"It is pretty simple. We played as we did against Saudi Arabia, but against a better opponent," Hummels told reporters after the match, according to ZDF.

"We talked about a few things, such as not losing possession and protection, which unfortunately we did not put into action today.

"Mexico deserved the game because we made it too easy for them, knowing we should not have allowed that to happen.

"If seven or eight players play offensively, then it is clear that the offensive force is greater than the defensive stability. That is what I often say internally.

"Our stability is not good, you have to say - often only Jerome (Boateng) and I were at the back, so they mercilessly attacked us."

The Bayern Munich defender was also asked if the latest result would serve as a wake-up call for Die Mannschaft.

"A wake-up call is too late, we now have to win two games. Otherwise, the World Cup is over," Hummels added.

"We actually had the wake-up call against Saudi Arabia."

They will probably finish on 4 points in group stages, and depend on other teams in order to progress into the next round. Hummels is correct, their tactical approach was really biased and a downfall for them to win that particular game.
