Diego Maradona Slams Argentina Boss, Comments On Lionel Messi Penalty Miss

By Kurt Buckerfield - Jun 18, 2018 07:28 AM @KurtLaduma

Argentina legend Diego Maradona has heavily criticised the Albiceleste's manager following their 1-1 draw with Iceland at the 2018 FIFA World Cup on Saturday, and also commented on Lionel Messi's penalty miss.

The 57-year-old, who attended his country’s stalemate with Iceland on Saturday afternoon, believes Jorge Sampaoli will not be allowed back into Argentina if his team continues to play the way they did against the minnows.

"Playing like that, he can't come back to Argentina," Maradona said, according to AFP.

"It's a disgrace. Not having prepared for the match knowing that Iceland are all 1.90m tall... I get the feeling there's a general anger at the heart of the team."

Maradona refused to blame Messi for his penalty miss against Iceland, however, saying that he missed plenty of kicks from the spot in his career.

"I don't blame the players," he added.

"I could blame the lack of work rate. But I can't blame the players, much less Messi, who gave it all he had.

"I missed five penalties on the spin and I was still Diego Armando Maradona. I don't think that they dropped two points because Messi missed a penalty."

Argentina will play their second Group D match against Croatia on Thursday night, and will be doing all they can to get the vital three points.

@Richardpirates Argentina will not come back, They are going to get a group stage exit. Nigeria is going to beat them and Croatia will not accept group stage exit after a good start. I see Iceland and Croatia progressing. Ice land is using the Italian style, You perfect your defence and attacking will take care of itself, its boring but it always worked.

Maradona must stop threatening this team. He lost the opening game to Cameroon in 1990, no one pointed fingers at the team. This game needed Dybala, Messi and Dimaria at their best. A train was parked there, needed skilful creative players. Not sure why Dybala did not play.
