A financial reward has been offered for the person who spread the rumour that Diego Maradona died following Argentina's 2018 FIFA World Cup win over Nigeria this week.

Images of the 57-year-old looking worse for wear while in attendance at the Albiceleste's match against Nigeria did the rounds on social media earlier this week, with many reports suggesting he might have had more than just alcohol in his system, especially given his controversial history with drugs.

On Wednesday, Maradona himself denied claims that he was hospitalised after the game, insisting that medical professionals only saw to him at the stadium because he hurt his neck.

The football legend has now let his lawyer, Matias Morla, do the talking following rumours that the 1986 World Cup winner died after the game in Russia.

"I've just spoken to my office in Buenos Aires and I have instructed them to make public the decision to offer a reward of 300 000 Argentinian pesos (£8 340) to the person who provides accurate and precise information about the author of the voice messages," he told Argentine newspaper Clarin.

"When it comes to technological issues like these, I think we can get to the bottom of this.

"But especially if there's a financial incentive, someone who knows how something started often ends up revealing it and helping to unmask whoever was behind an atrocity like this.

"It was a very long night. I was in Belarus for work reasons and helping to organise Diego's travel arrangements.

"But Maradona's sisters heard the news and couldn't contact me or their brother. One of them ended up collapsing. We can't let things like this go unanswered."

Maradona Responds To Claims He Was Hospitalised

Maradona was also reportedly working as an ambassador for FIFA at the time of the match, but it has since been claimed that they have cut ties with the Argentine.

I'm not one to judge but he looked like he was on something throughout the match.

I could not get it that he was so hyped up while in the stands, at least not the way a professional person would carry themselves. As if that was not enough, I saw him doing the middle-finger thing with both his hands on the sound of full time wistle although the camera was quick to move away. Surely that kind of behaviour is not normal for a pro.
