As much as the World Cup is about success stories and joyous occasions, it has also brought about great heartbreak since its inception in 1930.
Despite being just two rounds of fixtures into the tournament in Russia, some big nations have already officially been knocked out of the competition, including Costa Rica, who failed to pick up a point from their first two matches.
This means that three-time UEFA Champions League winner Keylor Navas is already out of the tournament, although he has been his country's standout performer.
Tottenham Hotspur winger Heung-min Son suffered the same heartbreak on Saturday, following Korea Republic's 2-1 loss to Mexico. Son's late screamer from distance proved to be nothing but a consolation for his country, although the Premier League star can hold his head high.
Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah is another high-profile player confirmed to be out of the tournament following Egypt's two losses from their first two games.
The African side will play Saudi Arabia in a match that will mean little on Monday afternoon, but both nations will want to at least post three points on the board. Along with Salah, Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny is also heading home.
Morocco captain Mehdi Benatia will feature in his last game of the World Cup against Spain on Monday evening, along with playmaker Hakim Ziyech, who has shown glimpses of magic in Russia. The African nation has also failed to win a single point so far, but Monday is their chance to salvage some pride.
Poland duo Robert Lewandowski and Piotr Zielinski also only have one more game left in the tournament following their nation's 3-0 loss to Colombia on Sunday evening.
