The tournament has been full of thrilling moments up until this point, and with the knockout rounds around the corner, it promises to heat up even more. The World Cup stage is where many high-profile stars have made their names, like Mesut Ozil and Thomas Muller did in 2010, and James Rodriguez did four years ago in Brazil.

Although we are just two weeks into the tournament in Russia, a few young players have done themselves no harm with their performances so far, including 21-year-old Uruguayan midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.

The Juventus man has played in all three of his nation's Group A matches, impressing with his composure and ability to play the ball comfortably with both his left and right foot.

Russia midfielder Aleksandr Golovin has stood out for the host nation, having scored once and assisted a further two strikes in two matches. The CSKA Moscow player missed Russia's final Group A game against Uruguay, but he will be important for them going forward.

Another player who could slowly but surely becoming a household name is young Hirving Lozano of Mexico. The 22-year-old winger scored his country's winner against Germany in their first Group F match, and was also in terrific form against South Korea.

Manuel Akanji, 22, has also impressed for Switzerland, as has France's Benjamin Pavard, 22, who has stepped up to the plate at right-back despite naturally being a centre-back.

Colombia defender Yerry Mina was excellent for his country in their recent 3-0 victory over Poland, although his future at FC Barcelona reportedly hangs in the balance. That performance might have pleased some of the club's officials, however, who might now want to him to remain at the club after all.

Serbia playmaker Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, a reported Real transfer target, is another name on fans' lips, as is Mexico defender Carlos Salcedo, who was immense in his nation's previous match against Korea Republic.
