2018 World Cup

Teams: Argentina v Iceland

Date: 16 June 2018

Venue: Otkrytie Arena

Read: Ronaldo Equals Magical World Cup Pele Record

Agentina, who were runners-up four years ago, get their 2018 World Cup campaign underway against tournament debutants Iceland - Here's how the two nations line up.

The match is scheduled to get underway at 15h00.

Argentina are one of the favourites to go all the way to the final after they were runners-up in Brazil 2014.

However, Jorge Sampaoli’s charges struggled in qualifying only securing their ticket to Russia thanks to a hat-trick by Messi in their last qualifier against Ecuador.

Sampaoli has opted to start Angel di Maria and Sergio Aguero with Messi, leaving Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala on the bench.

On the other hand, the Icelandic nation will be making their first ever appearance at the World Cup.

Iceland defied all the odds to qualify for the finals sweeping aside teams such as Croatia, Ukraine and Turkey on their road to Russia.

Iceland has the smallest population of all the 32 nations at the World Cup in Russia with only 335, 000 inhabitants.

Heimir Hallgrimsson’s troops will be looking to build on their impressive 2016 European Championship campaign where they reached the quarterfinals.

Here's how they line up:

Argentina: Caballero; Salvio, Otamendi, Rojo, Tagliafico; Biglia, Mascherano; Meza, Messi, Di María; Aguero.

Iceland: Halldórsson; Árnason, Saevarsson, R.Sigurdsson,  Magnusson; Gudmundsson, Gunnarsson, Hallfredsson; Bjarnason, Finnbogason, G.Sigurdsson.

Messi played draw against Baroka FC, whereas the almighty king CR7(uefa specualist) played draw against the giant( squad that is made of Real Madrid, barcalona, man city, man united& athletico Madrid).. I don’t understand y ppl r still comparing messi and king CR...can messi face spain alone? Can messi win uefa three times in a row, can messi score a banana kick goal, can messi score with a header,,can messi win a major cup with argenteina?

There are so many subjective idiots here. When Portugal won the Euro, SECOND FIDDLE IDIOTS were like.....Ronaldon did nothing to help his team, so its Portugal's hard work. When Argentina reached the finals, the story was different, it was as if Messi alone took the team to the finals. When Messi won the UEFA CL without scoring goals in the final, it was all about Messi's greatness that barCOWlona won the title. When Ronaldo won the 2018 UEFA CL without scoring a goal in the final after contributing 15 goals in the tornament, it was as if he contributed nothing to their chamionship. I am asking myself, following this stupid logic paddled here......If Argentina goes far as semi finals.......will it be Messi's "greatness" or Argentina's collective achievement? If Portugal goes as far as last 16, will it be Ronaldo's poor self or Portugal's collective failure? In a situation where Portugal advances far than Argentina, will you be blaming Messi. If Portugal will advance to the finals and Ronaldo just adding numbers......will you still praise him for Portugal's collective achievements? How do you then judge a player's individual "greatness" (as you like to make everyone believe in the so called "gods")? Is a player great by just being part of a winning team or is he great by his individual contribution into game of football one game at a time?

Talking more praise about one now might be a sign u are not going to talk possitive about him anymore in this tournoment, may be was a first and last, remember Messi and Ronaldo never scored a goal in a world cup's knock out stages, what is yo say on that?

U can score three at one game and fail to qualify for next round and the talk changes, an important thing here is winning the games and go to next round

There is a possibilities one or both Between Portogal and Argentina fail to progress from group stages, or go through, so the talk is just for now not for later stages

They were selected strictly to score goals......when they do that, their teams benefit optimally. Portugal got 1 point against one of the best teams in this tornament. Argentina got 1 point against Iceland!! So its Portugal 1 - Argentina 1. Messi 0 - Ronaldo 3. Fact is, even if they can both reach the finals.....they will be judged by their INDIVIDUAL contribution to success of their national teams. Otherwise your common claim of "greatest"..."god"...."genius" are as good as hot air in between your behinds.
