Cavani Brace Sends Ronaldo's Portugal Packing

2018 World Cup Report: Uruguay v Portugal 30 June 2018

By SL International - Jun 30, 2018 10:02 PM

2018 World Cup

Result: Uruguay 2-1 Portugal

Date: 30 June 2018

Venue: Fisht Stadium

Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal bowed out of the 2018 World Cup after losing 2-1 to Uruguay, with Edinson Cavani netting an impressive brace.

Cavani netted the opener for Uruguay in the seventh minute with a powerful header at the back post after he was picked out by Luis Suarez from the left.

Portugal were pressurising Uruguay after a quarter of an hour as they went in search for the equaliser but the Sky Blue were solid at the back.

The European champions were patient going forward, combining passes together but there was now way through the resolute Uruguay defence.

Ronaldo had a chance to equalise for Portugal seven minutes before time with a free kick just outside the box but he could not get his strike over the wall.

As a result, the South Americans went into the break with a one-goal lead.

Pepe finally breached the Uruguay defence 10 minutes after the break with a powerful header following a corner to make 1-1 for Portugal.

Minutes later, Cavani restored the lead for Oscar Tabarez’s charges and completed his brace in the process with an impressive curling strike that left Rui Patrício no chance.

Fernando Sanchez’s troops were on the back foot once again and were struggling to carve out clear-cut chances in the final third.

Selecao threw on Ricardo Queresma and Andre Silva as they pushed for an equaliser, while Uruguay were dealt a blow when Cavani was forced off with 15 minutes.

The European champions, however, were restricted to efforts from distance in the closing stages, none of which threatened Fernando Muslera.

The Uruguayans managed to hold out until the final whistle to book their spot in the quarter-finals, where they will take on France next Friday (16h00 kick-off).

Penaldo had a chance to at least carry his Team to a WC final.I still remember when Messi helped Argentina to the 2014 WC final some cows mentioned something about him playing for a better team.......now that Penaldo failed to even reach the Quarterfinals with this talented Portugal team, what does that tell you?

Ronaldo's 1st game fooled a veryone in the world but I said Spain was varnerable team since they lost a coach 36 hrs before world cup starts I thought Portugal would collect 3 points instead they celebrated Ronaldo's 3 goals rather than look at themselves so a team failed to take maximum points

Gabriel Mercado inadvertently turned Lionel Messi’s strike into the back of Hugo Lloris' goal. Now Meisi wants to appeal to Fifa to award him the goal. Desperate times for the grass eater.

@Nelson Poor reasoning. World Cup is not about a medal, it's about the ultimate trophy, that's y the trophy is often paraded, not medals. Ur Meisi goat will only win the WC in ur fantasies.
