Venue: Fisht Stadium
Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal bowed out of the 2018 World Cup after losing 2-1 to Uruguay, with Edinson Cavani netting an impressive brace.
Cavani netted the opener for Uruguay in the seventh minute with a powerful header at the back post after he was picked out by Luis Suarez from the left.
Portugal were pressurising Uruguay after a quarter of an hour as they went in search for the equaliser but the Sky Blue were solid at the back.
The European champions were patient going forward, combining passes together but there was now way through the resolute Uruguay defence.
Ronaldo had a chance to equalise for Portugal seven minutes before time with a free kick just outside the box but he could not get his strike over the wall.
As a result, the South Americans went into the break with a one-goal lead.
Pepe finally breached the Uruguay defence 10 minutes after the break with a powerful header following a corner to make 1-1 for Portugal.
Minutes later, Cavani restored the lead for Oscar Tabarez’s charges and completed his brace in the process with an impressive curling strike that left Rui Patrício no chance.
Fernando Sanchez’s troops were on the back foot once again and were struggling to carve out clear-cut chances in the final third.
Selecao threw on Ricardo Queresma and Andre Silva as they pushed for an equaliser, while Uruguay were dealt a blow when Cavani was forced off with 15 minutes.
The European champions, however, were restricted to efforts from distance in the closing stages, none of which threatened Fernando Muslera.
