2018 World Cup
Result: Switzerland 2-2 Costa Rica
Date: 27 June 2018
Venue: Nizhny Novgorod Stadium
Switzerland qualified for the last 16 at the 2018 World Cup , despite playing to a 2-2 draw with Costa Rica in their final Group E encounter.
The Costa Ricans nearly broke the deadlock after just 10 minutes as Daniel Colindres rattled the upright with a curling effort from distance.
Switzerland went close with a long range strike of their own after 17 minutes, with Mario Gavranovic bending a low strike inches wide of the upright.
The Swiss eventually went ahead on 31 minutes as Breel-Donald Embolo, who was handed a start, picked out Blerim Džemaili to smash home from close range.
The opening goal seemed to have spurred more confidence in Switzerland as they went in search for another goal, although they were let down by the decision-making in the final third.
Embolo tries to register his name on the scoresheet eight minutes into the second half, but goalkeeper Keylor Navas produced a good save to deny the forward in the box.
The Costa Ricans levelled matters in the 56th minute as Kendall Watson nodded home from close range following a corner from Joel Campbell.
Costa Rica went in search of a second goal, with Bryn Ruiz causing the Swiss defence a lot of problems with set-pieces.
Embolo was presented with another chance to put Switzerland ahead after 77 minutes, but the young forward opted to pass rather than shoot in the box.
Switzerland eventually restored their lead with two minutes remaining, with Josip Drmic turning home Denis Zakaria's cross.
However, Costa Rica were awarded a penalty in the third minute of time added on. Ruiz took the spot-kick but he hit the woodwork, before the ball deflected in off Jan Sommer as the clash ended 2-2.
The point sees Switzerland secure second spot in the group, while Costa Rica finish bottom with no wins.
