Cristiano Ronaldo netted a hat-trick to earn Portugal a point as they drew 3-3 with Spain in a thrilling Group B clash at the 2018 World Cup.

The European champions were awarded a penalty after just three minutes when Ronaldo was brought down under the challenge of Nacho. The Real Madrid star stepped up and converted the spot-kick, 1-0.

Spain managed to carve out a chance six minutes later when the ball fell kindly for David Silva, who could only blaze over the crossbar from 18-yards out.

La Roja continued to dominate and they were eventually rewarded for their dominance on 23 minutes as Diego Costa saw off the challenge from four defenders before drilling the ball into the bottom corner.

Three minutes later, Spain went agonisingly close to taking the lead when Isco rattled the crossbar with a powerful volley that left Rui Patricio helpless.

However, Portugal restored their lead two minutes before the break when David de Gea failed to hold on to a routine strike from Ronaldo that trickled into the back of the net.

Spain were level 10 minutes into the second half, as Sergio Busquets' header back across goal was turned home by Costa for his second on the night.

The turnaround was complete in the 57th minute when Nacho, who gave away a penalty in the first half, found the back of the net with a stunning volley from 20-yards out.

Portugal responded with a double change as Joao Mario and Ricardo Quaresma were introduced, while Spain threw on Thiago Alcantara for Iniesta.

Fernando Santos' last throw of the dice saw him introduce AC Milan forward Andre Silva for the final 10 minutes as they pushed for an equaliser.

Selecao eventually leveled matters with three minutes remaining as Ronaldo completed his hat-trick by firing home a superb free-kick that left De Gea with no chance.
