A late own goal handed Iran their second win in World Cup history as they defeated Morocco 1-0 at the Krestovsky Stadium on Friday evening.
Morocco were dominant in the early stages and looked for an early goal, while Iran were struggling to get out of their own half in the first quarter of an hour.
However, Carlos Queiroz’s charges were settling in the game after 25 minutes, although clear-cut chances were still hard to come by for nations.
However, Iran almost got the breakthrough with two minutes remaining of the first stanza but Morocco goalkeeper Munir was alert to keep the score goalless going into the halftime break.
The match was pretty even ten minutes into the second stanza, with both sides very organised defensively.
Herve Renard’s troops were trying their best to go forward towards but were met with a resolute defensive block of the Iranians.
With 20 minutes remaining, Queiroz’s men were starting to get chances on counter-attacks as Morocco started to look shaky at the back.
However, Iran snatched the victory in stoppage time with Aziz Bouhaddouz netting an own goal following a teasing cross at the near post.
