Sweden Advance To Last 16, Mexico Finish Second

2018 World Cup

Result: Mexico 0-3 Sweden

Date: 27 June 2018

Venue: Ekaterinburg Arena

Sweden secured their spot in the last 16 at the 2018 World Cup with a 3-0 victory over Mexico in their final Group F clash.

The Swedes nearly broke the deadlock after just a five minutes through Emil Forsberg, who sent a fine curling effort towards goal which Ochoa managed to palm away.

After a quiet spell in the half, Sweden carved out another opening as as Ludwig  Augustinsson's cross was tipped into the path of Berg in the box, but the striker failed to direct his header on target.

Ochoa was proving to be the busier of the two goalkeepers and he was called once again in the 31st minute to deny Berg from point-blank range.

The Mexicans managed to carve out an opening five minutes before the break but Carlos Vela sent his close-range effort over the crossbar.

Sweden broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half with Augustinsson sending a volley into the corner despite Ochoa's best efforts.

The Swedes were then awarded a penalty just after the mark, with Andreas Granqvist converting the penalty to double the lead and claim his second goal of the campaign.

With 15 minutes remaining, Sweden sealed the result as a contest as Edson Alvarez deflected the ball into his own net.

Mexico were pushing for a goal to improve their goal difference in the closing stages, but they were unable to carve out a clear-cut chance.

The win sees Sweden finish as group winners, while Mexico secured second spot following Germany's loss to Korea Republic.
