The Brazil national team has been blessed with many world-class talents over the years, including Ronaldo, Pele, Ronaldinho and Neymar, but the Selecao have also lost some great talents to other countries.

On Thursday, Mario Fernandes ran out as a right-back for Russia. The 27-year-old CSKA Moscow player was born in Sao Caetano do Sul in Brazil, and even represented the Selecao in a friendly against Japan on 14 October 2014. However, after acquiring Russian citizenship, he made his debut for the World Cup hosts on 7 October 2017 and has since represented the European nation six times.
One of the best players Brazil missed out on is Pepe, who is representing Portugal at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The 35-year-old, whose full name is Kepler Laveran de Lima Ferreira, was born and raised in Brazil but obtained Portuguese citizenship in 2007. He never represented the country of his birth at any level, but the World Cup in Russia will be his sixth major international tournament with Portugal. He was also part of the team that won the 2016 UEFA European Championship, and has made 95 appearances for A Selecao so far.
When Portugal face Spain on tonight, two further players with Brazilian roots could be involved for La Furia Roja. Diego Costa's case made worldwide headlines after he switched allegiances in October 2013, just months ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in his home country. He was born in Lagarto, Brazil, and made two friendly appearances for the Selecao but opted to put on the Spain shirt after obtaining Spanish citizenship. Costa has since made 18 appearances for Spain, scoring seven goals along the way.
Thiago Alcantara is another Spaniard with Brazilian roots. He was born in Italy to Brazilian parents, with his father having lifted the 1994 FIFA World Cup with the Selecao. Interestingly, his brother, Rafinha Alcantara, represents Brazil but did not make the Selecao's Russia 2018 squad.
