According to the Daily Express, the biggest disappointment until now has been the performances of Argentina and their talisman, Lionel Messi. The 31-year-old, who has not yet scored for his country in this edition of the competition, has not been the only poor performer for the Albiceleste, though, with Paris Saint-Germain winger Angel Di Maria having also done very little.
Current world champions Germany were on the verge of being eliminated from the tournament after the second round of games before a late Toni Kroos winner against Sweden saved their blushes, and some of their big names have not produced what has been expected of them. Bayern Munich duo Thomas Muller and Jerome Boateng have been bitterly disappointing, while Arsenal's Mesut Ozil has failed to create the chances he usually does for Die Mannschaft.
Brazil have three players on this list, with many feeling that Neymar, Gabriel Jesus and Willian deserve their place on it. With the South Americans tipped as one of the favourites to lift the trophy this year, they will need the three above Selecao stars to improve their overall contributions, the Daily Mail reckons.
Manchester United's David de Gea and FC Barcelona's Gerard Pique have not been at their best either, having been part of a Spain defence that has shipped in five goals in three games so far in this tournament.
Another two stars who have struggled at the World Cup, according to some, are Poland's Robert Lewandowski and Bernardo Silva of Portugal.
